Arizona Impact
Since September 2001, the School Violence Prevention Demonstration Program has provided comprehensive professional development to K-8 teachers serving schools within the Eastern and Central regions of Arizona. Teachers in schools–ranging from rural and remote areas, such as Young, Stanfield, and Toltec Schools; large inner city, high poverty, high minority school districts such as Cartwright and Washington School Districts in Phoenix; schools serving our Native American populations, such as San Carlos Elementary School on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and Kinsey Community School serving Navajo students in Flagstaff; and suburban schools in Mesa and Gilbert School Districts–learn to embrace the use of civics curricula to address violence in their schools.
Teachers participating in the program come from regular education, special education and parochial schools. Since the implementation of the SVPD Program, 126 teachers from over 27 school districts throughout the state have engaged in a minimum of 56 hours of high quality, standards-based professional development and integrated an average of 80 hours of civics based curricula into their social studies and language arts curriculum.
