Project Citizen
Project Citizen takes students involved in the SVPD Program to a new level with their learning by engaging them as community problem-solvers, whether that be their classroom, school, neighborhood community, or town, city or state.
Project Citizen is a curricular program that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy
This is 6-step action-based program that teaches students how to solve issues of public policy by:
1) Researching and explaining the problem
2) Identifying solutions
3) Proposing the most appropriate public policy
4) Formulating an action plan for getting their policy passed
5) Presenting their project
6) Reflecting on their learning experience
Entire classes of students work cooperatively on the project and develop a portfolio of their work and present their project in a public showcase before a panel of civic-minded community members.
